SELF REGULATION

In order to remain in a state of coherence our task becomes one of consciously managing our nervous system. To prevent our system from experiencing the effects of trauma by becoming overwhelmed we need to maintain our system functioning so that it operates within a zone of safety otherwise referred to as our window of tolerance. This is done by effective self-regulation.

There are many ways to self-regulate (social interaction, laughter, exercise, drugs, smoking, alcohol, food, meditation, music – the list is endless).  However not all methods of self-regulation restore the innate coherence of the nervous system. Through developing a skilled awareness of the state of our nervous systems we can rebalance and restore the resilience of our nervous system.

The tools we need for this purpose are:

  • Resourcing, (which serves to moderate our activation via a process of pendulation)

  • The Felt sense, (the Felt sense is the language of sensation which is used to describe awareness of the body)

  • The awareness of Body and Interpersonal Boundaries.
